Only think i can say is you get what you pay for.
There are basically 3 main manufacturers of the 'screens' (LCD and Plasma) but the key parts are the electronics - cheap brands - cheapy electronics...

Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic - can't really go wrong.

LG - wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole and if i had a 10 foot pole id smash the shit out of it...

Vivo and all those cheap no frills brands are good if you have a low budget and aren't looking for the best picture and all that, but id be ready to buy another one in 3 or 4 years lol - 5 if ya lucky

I bought a Samsung 55 inch Plasma and honestly it's worth every dollar (although i got it for staff price at Harveys)
At mate of mine has some Hense or something like that and it isn't all that bad, he paid bugger all for it compared to me, but put the 2 side by side and you will see the diff.

Yup, I brought a Samsung 42inch LCD from work (Hardly Normal) and it's a great screen, I brought a good brand as I got a cheaper one years ago and had issues with it, replaced it within 2 days. Depends on where you are as well mate and what budget you have to go with, if you had the cash now, I would go to your local HN due to the fact they have a sale on today for end of Financial year.

I got a Samsung 50inch Plasma a little while ago it has a network connection that you can stream movies from your pc or media centre from. The only problem I had with it was that the media streaming software that comes with it is crap. But I found an Aussie company that has media streaming software that works very well on it.

Have a look around some more, Dicky Smith is a bit dear and you should be able to do better elsewhere.

Got a Phillips 42 inch back lit & it's been good, can't say anything good about their wireless home theatre though, broken 4 times in 3 years, greatest piece of shit we've ever bought.

If anyone want a home theatre, go a receiver & speakers, then you can plug in as many things as you want & really pump out the sound. we got a Yamaha YHT-292 & it's freakin brilliant & only $400 compared to the 800 for the shit Phillips.

Hey Crim I heard that the TV at Dick Smith's has Samsung internals which usually means it or its components were /was made by the same factory in Asia that makes the Samsung's

A Guy I'm working with at the moment's mate bought one and says its fine besides that its good value for $499 just that its branded with a dodgy name that's all
if I was on a budget I would go down the store and see one running and make a choice from there.

I was looking at one when we bought the Yamaha receiver a few weeks ago & the picture was good & for the price you might not go wrong.

Samsung, like a lot of other major TV manufacturers, supply panels and electronics to other manufacturers. It doesn't however mean that it's as good (technology wise) as what they put in their own TV's. Selling older or lower spec tech to these cheaper TV manufacturers allows Samsung (and others) to generate extra income.

From what I can see Vivo assemble TVs in China from components sourced from several TV manufacturers. While particular models may use components sourced from Samsung, it's probably not true for all the TV's in their line up.

Just a note on that particular plasma. It's only 768p (1024x768)and not full HD (1080p) which keeps the cost down. Not a problem if you only intend to watch TV and DVD's. If you intend to do Blueray then it won't do it justice.

That is true TJet, I am one who hasn't bothered with a Blueray myself, I have one in this laptop but I only have a standard DVD player at home that can play files from USB as well, all my movies are DVD and haven't thought about changing yet, I suppose I should think about it :D
