    Guild Wars

Does anyone still have this or play this?

I still like to logon and do some alliance battles for friends and organise gvg.

I have this, somewhere. Haven't played it in ages though as I grew frustrated with the lack of interaction in the game. Having everything instanced got annoying :(

I was just looking at a buy for this game, because of the discount on Steam. Is it still not worth playing?

I haven't played it in quite sometime. As far as the game went I enjoyed it a lot and the last time I was on there were still quite a few players on the server. I never got into their PvP aspect of it.

Edit: Sorry for this wall of text. If there is a review page on OLDr, you could probably add it there too lol. I hope it helps Hansuke make a decision.

Me and my mate Des got this at the same time, then hicks commandered my account for a good 6 months or more and got a character maxed out with nice armour and everything. He and Tails were quite into it.

Then Des and I got back into it big time when the Eye of the North expansion came out (which is an awesome expansion IMO) and finished that, also knocked a big chunk out of the Factions edition of the game. Amidst all this, while I was at work, he finished the Nightfall edition of the game which I didn't have at the time, though I do now.

We started playing again briefly a little while ago, just so he could show me around Nightfall. I only bought it coz it came avaliable on steam (I have physical copies of Prophercies (the original GW), Factions and EotN expansion), and it was fast and easy... like Hicksy ;)

In my opinion Guild Wars is a great game. The graphics are still beautiful, the environment design is fantastic with plenty of variety once you purchase all the campaigns. From the typical fantasy settings in the original Prophecies campaign to the asian inspired Factions and the beautiful desert and middle eastern feel of Nightfall, there's plenty of eye candy to go around. Add to that Eye of the North, and its plethora of new environments including icy north pole style landscapes and new jungles and underground caverns with bioluminecent creatures to poke and prod. There is too much variety in the environments to mention here, but I think you'll enjoy it.

I agree with Hicks that the instancing can make the world feel empty, however it is also a blessing sometimes as you never have to worry about dick heads stealing quest mobs or ganking you or any of that crap, and best of all - IT'S FREE TO PLAY! No monthy fees which means your subscription is always active. So if you get an itching to play it one afternoon or over a weekend, it's always ready to go.

Strangely we never got into the PvP side of this game, which is odd because, for one, Des is a PvP nut and we always try the PvP in new MMOs that come out. And two, Guild Wars was designed as a PvP title. I mean the name says it all... "GUILD Wars" There are some pretty big maps to fight on and the PvP guild ladder is always active. Plus, because the game is based around what skills you take to the battle, it's an even playing field in terms of gear.

Skills replace epic armour and weapons in GW. There are some skills that are very hard to get which have to be taken from boss monsters, some of which are nasty to take down and require great timing and tactics to do so. In this game, every equal level group of enemies is a challenge to fight. Healers have a hell of a time keeping a party alive, because creatures do so much damage and you have very little health to begin with.

I think i've just rambled on with more info than you probably needed, but I really support this game, because it's fun and it's free to play. As for its world wide popularity, I think it's fairly high up on the MMO charts still. Of course, it's hard to rate active players on GW, becuase everyone's subscription is always active. So if there are 3million subscribers to the game, it's fair to say that possibly 2.5 million haven't played in several years.

Anyway, I highly recommend GW, it's definately worth it and it will sit on your HDD for a long time, just waiting for the weeked where you and some mates want a change. To that end; if you do decide to purchase the game, and you do want someone to show you around, it just so happens I "could possibly" be in the mood to join you. ;)

t00thPIK is my xfire, add me.

One quick negative to add before I go: You can't solo per se, in GW. You NEED a part to do anything in the game, because as I mentioned, the game relies heavily on tactics and balance. There's no hero class in this game. So, to that end, they've given you Henchmen. You can find henchmen in any town and add them to your party.

Each one will be of a particular class, and some will be of a particular skill focus within that class, Fire Elementalist as a damage spec, for example, or Earth Elementalist for an interupt/knockdown spec. Of course, Henchmen are by no means a replacement for real players, but sometimes they are necessary if you can't find enough players to fill the party... or if, in some cases, they end up being better than the bitchy bickering batch of PUG lowlifes you managed to pick up, anyway.

Since Nightfall, however, there are now Heros you can add to your party. You meet the main heroes as NPC in certain parts of the game, then they become unlocked for you to add to your party. Some heroes are simply unlockable by achieving certain goals. Basically, these guys are just Henchies on steroids. They work just like a normal character in your party. At any time whilst in a town, you can setup their skills, change their secondary class, or remove it altogether. Heros make soloing a lot easier than just going it with ordinary Henchmen and a great addition to the game. I really wish WoW had Heroes and or Henchies, sometimes :p

However if you only like grouping with people, you won't always be able to do that, so it's something to keep in mind.

OK, I'll leave it there now, promise. :)

Adding to the above, you can basically solo with Heroes and Henchmen the entire 4 games. There are of course some mission where this is virtually impossible, but I have gone through Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall (all missions) just with Heroes & Henchies.
Sort of revived my interest a bit. :)

Thanks for that COMPLETE review t00thPIK. That was a bucket load in info in a concise format, and I appreciate it. I went ahead and bought the GW trilogy on Steam, and started playing a bit. I will get you added to Xfire later today, and thanks.

I'm glad you told me about henchmen. I didn't know that (that would require me to read about the game, which I'm not prone to do;)). I was actually using some of the game guards to help me out on some baddies cause there were too many of them for me to handle at once. I would pick a fight with 3 and them run away to where some guards were and they would help me out..

It seems like most of the other MMO's that I've played so far. I'm sure it will be fine. I just couldn't figure out how to jump. It's usually the space key.
