Well, seems that Blizzard have come to the party on the fan made MMO mod for Starcraft. But it's not going to be what it first sounded like, infact it's not going to be an MMO at all. Ruined the whole idea IMO.

Last month StarCraft II fans experienced both joy and devastation when a fan-made mod entitled World of StarCraft was simultaneously announced and crushed. Fortunately Blizzard stepped in to clarify that the company's intervention was merely due to the mod's name and the protection of the company's trademarks. Fortunately the mod has returned under the title of StarCraft Universe and we have some new details on just what the mod will feature.

So after all that fuss, what can gamers actually expect from StarCraft Universe?

* A wide variety of monsters, bosses, and character classes. SCU classes include: Infantry, Special-Ops, Demolition, and many others.
* A game save system. These maps will allows players to create, save, and load existing characters (a unique function uncommon to custom StarCraft maps).
* Hundreds of customizable weapons, runes, and equipment to choose from. They can be acquired as loot or bought in shops.
Sounds great! There's gotta be a catch though...

* Multiplayer experience. These maps allow (and encourage) up to twelve players in one match.
Damn, there it is. Guess that means it's not exactly going to be an MMO. Granted the mod uses the StarCraft II engine player limit comes from the limitation of the custom maps within the game. As a result the game will also lack a levelling system. Character progression will instead occour through the gaining of "loot (items dropped by defeated enemies), minerals (for purchasing items and weapons from several shops), allocation points (granted from killing bosses, used to permanently boost a stat of your choice), and rank (attained by killing raid bosses, unlocks the ability to purchase higher grade equipment)", allowing players to customise and boost their character stats.
