No mods or self-hosted dedicated servers for Bad Company 2
    http://games.on.net/article/7809/No_mods_or_self-hosted_dedicated_servers_for_Bad_Company_2

A major news post at the official Battlefield: Bad Company 2 blog has revealed the security measures DICE will be implementing in this eagerly-anticipated FPS. In addition to implementing PunkBuster anti-cheating software, DICE has confirmed that neither mod tools nor public server files will be made publicly available.

"Public Server Files: We will not distribute these publicly. There are many factors for why we have decided this with the biggest factor being security & integrity of our game & Dedicated Servers."

Apparently it will still be possible to rent dedicated servers from EA, but custom maps and such are out of the question.

The PC Beta Test will run from January 28 through to February 25 -- more details here.

So if they don't have local server farms or allow places like Node and GA to host servers, we are otherwise getting another MW2 clone.

So does that mean we can rent a Netwars server with Zeddy? If we get enough interest in the game that is.

I don't think Zed will be able to run it MB. Sounds like only official EA servers.

They did this with 2142 as well, but I know GA was the first to be allowed to host official servers, but server software had been released, this is another kick in the teeth for gamers, it's like the companies are trying to plot the downfall of clans/guilds and communities.

Meh, just another game I'll be voting "NO" with my wallet ... gotta laugh at the crap excuse of it being for security reasons, pffffft, load of PR wank spin.

I personally think its more along the lines of the downfall of PC games mate. I reckon they want all games of the future on consoles or similar machines. Give it time, it'll happen. :(

Arcades -> Home PC gaming -> Consoles

It's going to happen sadly enough.

Is fine, just opens up the market for others, there's still good money to be had with PC gaming.
