Electronic Arts have announced exactly how the driver profile system will work in their upcoming racer, Need For Speed: SHIFT. The driver profile will follow a player through their single player career, and eventually find its way online, and is based on how the driver behaves on the track.

The company claims that the feature pushes the entire racing genre forward, by introducing a feature that hasn't been seen in racing games before. The driver profile is based on four different gameplay elements - Personality, Success, Profile Points, and Badges.

The features are explained in more depth by EA:
    1. Personality - a player’s driving style determines whether they are an aggressive or precise driver.
    2. Success - as in every race, the ultimate goal is to finish at the top of the podium.
    3. Profile points - every car passed, every corner mastered, every opponent taken out generates profile points.
    4. Badges - these unique icons bring individuality and style to each player’s driver profile, as each player races and completes top achievements.

As a player progresses through the game and develops their driver profiles, they'll unlock new challenges, form rivalries with other drivers, and even unlock new vehicles and customisation options. The award system aims to "keep players in each race" regardless of whether they are going to win or not.

Patrick Soderlund, Senior Vice President of EA Games Europe had the following to say about the new feature:
The new driver profile feature in Need for Speed SHIFT gives players full control of how they progress through game. In SHIFT, how you drive is who you are behind the wheel.
Need for Speed: SHIFT is due for release on the 17th of September, and will be available on the PC, PS3, PSP and the Xbox 360. For more information about the game, check out our previous news coverage.
